A POS for retail is the system you use to take payments from customers and keep track of what you sell. It includes the software, the screen you work from and, usually, the receipt printer and the cash drawer. What sets it apart from an old-fashioned cash register is that it doesn't just add up: it knows which products you have and how many are left.

In a small shop it's normal for one person to serve, take payments, restock and close up. The POS has to make that easy.
You find the product, add it to the sale and charge. If they pay in cash, the change is already worked out.
If a customer comes back to exchange or return, you do it from the POS and it's on record.
For what isn't in the catalogue there are generic products by VAT rate, and you give them a name and price on the spot.
