A traditional cash register does one thing very well: add up and charge. The problem appears when you need more. Knowing how much of a product is left, changing a price without going key by key, seeing the month's sales, selling online too.
Besides, regulation is moving towards systems that guarantee recorded sales can't be altered, which is what Verifactu pursues. Many old registers weren't designed for it, and it's worth asking what you'll do when it's required.
