Point of sale terminal

Point of sale terminal: the equipment and software to take payments in your shop

When someone looks for a point of sale terminal, sometimes they're thinking of a device and sometimes of a program. It's really both: the equipment on your counter and the software that knows what you sell, at what price and how much is left. With TPV Pro we give you the whole set, installed and ready.

  • Screen, printer and drawer, all set up
  • The software that links your counter to your stock
  • Hardware eligible for the Kit Digital
  • We teach you to use it from day one

What it includes

The parts of a point of sale terminal

Sales screen

From there you find products, build the sale and take payment.

Receipt printer

A thermal printer, so the customer gets their receipt straight away.

Cash drawer

It opens when you take cash and holds notes and coins.

The software

It's what knows your products, prices and stock, and records every sale.

Card payments

Your bank's card machine is separate; the terminal records which method each customer pays with.

Link to your online shop

If you have an online shop, it shares catalogue and stock with it.

Quick guide

What is a point of sale terminal?

A point of sale terminal, or POS, is the system used to record and take payment for a sale where it happens, usually a shop counter. It's called a “terminal” because it's the workstation: a screen, the receipt printer, the cash drawer and the software that runs it all.

It's often confused with the card machine. They're not the same: the card machine is the bank's device for taking card payments. The point of sale terminal is everything else: where you find the product, see the total, choose how the customer pays and print the receipt.

With TPV Pro the terminal comes as a complete package: we leave it with the equipment (if you need it), the software installed and configured, and the online shop connected if you want one.

In practice

How the terminal works at the counter

The important thing about a terminal is that it doesn't make you think. This is what happens in a normal sale.

You pick the product

You find it on the screen and add it to the sale. The total updates instantly.

You take payment

You mark how the customer pays. If it's cash, the change is worked out and the drawer opens.

You print the receipt

The thermal printer produces the receipt in seconds and the sale is recorded.

You close the day

You close the till and can look it up later, with the detail of what was sold.

What makes the difference

A connected terminal, not an isolated till

A terminal that only takes payments solves half the problem. What really saves work is every sale updating the stock without you doing anything. If the terminal doesn't know how much you have, you'll have to count by hand and the numbers won't add up.

With TPV Pro the terminal works with the catalogue and stock of your PrestaShop shop. What leaves over the counter comes off the same stock your online shop uses, so there aren't two inventories to reconcile.

Buying guide

What to look for when choosing a point of sale terminal

Beyond price, there are things worth checking before you buy. They're what makes the difference day to day.

That it's a package.

Equipment and software that work well together, installed by someone who knows what they're doing.

That the hardware is standard.

Standard screen, thermal printer and drawer, easy to replace if something breaks.

That it doesn't tie you down.

That you can keep using your online shop and catalogue without rebuilding them.

That it's quick to learn.

If the terminal is complicated, your staff will avoid it or make more mistakes.

Who answers when it fails.

Check there's close support, by phone or WhatsApp, and not just a manual.
